Powerful beachbreak peaks break along a sandy stretch flanked by rocks near the mouth of Gazos Creek, about 50 miles south of San Francisco on the San Mateo coast. It needs a peaky W swell in the 2-6ft range and an E offshore wind, which means morning sessions are your window before sea breezes kick in. Works best on high tide when the banks fill out and the exposed rocks become less of a factor. This is an intermediate-level wave that rarely draws a crowd, partly because it only fires a few times a month and partly because the proximity to a stream mouth and active seal and sea lion breeding grounds makes this one of the sharkier stretches of coast in Northern California. Bottom: beach with scattered rocks. Season: variable, medium consistency. Arrive early, check the banks before paddling out, and take the shark risk seriously.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The combination of low consistency, shark exposure, and remote-ish access keeps crowds minimal. Localism is not reported as an issue. That said, when it does come together, the surfers who show up tend to know the spot, so read the lineup and be respectful.

Access & Facilities

Free car park and restrooms on site. The spot sits within a state beach corridor, so access is straightforward. No food or rentals nearby, so bring your own water and snacks. Hazards are primarily the scattered rocks at lower tide and the documented shark activity near the creek mouth.

Nearby Alternatives

If Gazos is flat or blown out, the beachbreak stretch running from San Gregorio up toward Tunitas Creek picks up similar swell and goes on medium-high tide with an E wind. Pescadero State Beach to the north is another comparable option on the same swell window.
