A left-hand point that wraps nearly 90 degrees under the south tower of the Golden Gate Bridge, Fort Point is one of the most unusual surf experiences in California. It needs a mid-period W to NW swell to fire, low to incoming tide, and light S or NW winds to clean up the face. When those elements converge in winter, the wave can run chest-high to overhead and stay surprisingly glassy even when the rest of the coast is blown apart. Intermediate to advanced surfers only: the lineup is ringed by foot-slicing boulders, a prominent rock marks the inside section, and outgoing tides can hit seven knots, too fast to paddle against. Bottom: death boulders. Season: November through April. Consistency: fickle, highly tide and wind sensitive. Paddle out well before the tide turns and watch the current at all times because getting swept toward the Potato Patch is not a hypothetical.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Crowd pressure is heavy on weekends and the local vibe is genuinely intimidating. This spot has a documented history of lineup confrontations, including a publicized surfer-on-surfer violence incident. Do not rush the peak, read the priority order before paddling out, and keep your mouth shut until you've earned some recognition. Disgruntled regulars who still treat this as a secret spot are a real feature of the experience.

Access & Facilities

Follow the signs to Fort Point National Historic Site under the bridge. Parking is close to the break. Entry and exit through the rock shelf requires care, especially on bigger swells. Water quality is rated fair at best since this is the outflow of San Francisco Bay. No surf rentals on site. Watch for container ship traffic in the channel.

Nearby Alternatives

If Fort Point is maxed out or the tide is wrong, Ocean Beach to the south picks up the same NW swell and offers multiple beach peaks across a range of sizes. Bolinas and Stinson Beach are a short drive north for a mellower beach environment when the bay is going haywire.
