El Porto is LA's premier NW swell catcher, a sand-bottom beach break at the northern end of Manhattan Beach that punches well above its South Bay neighbors when winter groundswells arrive. NW through WNW combo swells are the bread and butter here, with E or SE winds grooming the surface. Mid tide is the sweet spot. Chest-high to double-overhead is the ideal range, but the break starts firing from knee-high and holds well past 10ft on the face when a real pulse comes through. The key is hunting the "holes" between the relentless closeout sections that dominate most of the beach on any given swell. Beach nourishment programs have historically buried those sandbars, so good banks are never guaranteed. Summer S and SW swells rarely cooperate here. Bottom: Sand. Season: October to April. Consistency: High for winter NW swells, low for summer. Water quality is fair at best, check Heal the Bay before paddling out after rain. On big days, beware the rip in front of the bathrooms on the inside.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekends attract a full spectrum of beachgoers and surfers. Small days bring out longboarders, kooks, and everyone in between. As size increases, the lineup self-selects hard. Above 10ft on the face, the crowd thins to local chargers only. Localism is minimal, but respect the pecking order when it gets heavy. Dawn patrol on weekdays is your best shot at quality peaks with fewer bodies.

Access & Facilities

Parking is available at the lot at the bottom of 45th Street off Highland Ave. Restrooms and showers are on the beach. The big power plant smokestacks are the unmistakable landmark. Plenty of food and surf shops within a short drive along Sepulveda Blvd.

Nearby Alternatives

When El Porto is closing out wall-to-wall, check Manhattan Beach Pier to the south for more defined peaks or head north toward Playa del Rey for a different sandbar setup. On smaller summer swells, El Segundo or the Breakwater can offer slightly more shape.
