A jetty-sheltered beginner wave on the southern Orange County coast, Doheny State Beach trades power for accessibility, offering slow, forgiving shoulders over a cobblestone and sand bottom. SSE, S, and SW swells are clipped by the spit's jetty before peeling softly across a wide beach break. NE Santa Ana winds clean things up and the wave works best at mid tide, when exposed rocks back off. Waist- to head-high is the sweet spot. At that size, the break suits beginners and cautious intermediates, when a stronger swell arrives, a sandbar and reef near the San Juan Creek mouth produce more legitimate rights. Crowds are moderate and welcoming, heavy on surf camps and families in summer. Bottom: sharp rocks and sand. Season: March to October. Consistency: reliable but rarely powerful. Water quality is genuinely poor and turns hazardous after rain, so check Surfrider or forecast services alerts before paddling out anywhere near that creek mouth.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Summer brings a full cast: kids' surf camps, beginner families, the occasional kayaker. The vibe is genuinely welcoming and low-pressure. Experienced surfers gravitate toward the Creek sandbar when it's working, which naturally separates skill levels. Dawn patrol in spring or fall cuts the crowd significantly.

Access & Facilities

Pay parking at the state park lot, cash or state park pass accepted at the machine. Restrooms, showers, and a lifeguard station are on-site. Water quality is the main hazard: fecal counts spike for 72 hours or more after any rain event. Check beach advisories before any session following precipitation.

Nearby Alternatives

San Clemente Pier and T-Street a few miles south offer more consistent performance surf when Doheny is too mushy or closed out due to water quality. Salt Creek, just north, handles bigger swells better and has a more defined right-hand point section.
