A mellow, forgiving beach break that earns its keep as one of LA's most accessible learner spots, sitting directly under the LAX flight path in Playa del Rey. It picks up SW and NW groundswell starting at knee-high and can hold up to around 8ft on a solid day, though quality degrades quickly with size. Offshore winds from the NE help clean things up in the morning before onshores push in by midday. Beginners and intermediates will appreciate the relatively easy paddle-out and the absence of a hostile lineup. Bottom: sand. Season: works year-round, with better shape in winter and spring. Consistency: moderate but sloppy. One honest note before you paddle out: the water quality here has a patchy reputation due to proximity to urban runoff, so check local advisories after any rain event.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays run near-empty. Weekends bring a few more surfers but it rarely gets genuinely competitive. There are some regulars who have surfed here for years and they're reportedly easygoing. El Porto to the north pulls much of the area's surf crowd, so Dockweiler catches a break on volume. Respect the regulars and you should have no problems.

Access & Facilities

Drive Imperial Highway west until the road ends at Playa del Rey and you've found it. Parking is straightforward, with an adjacent RV park. Restrooms and basic facilities are present at the state beach. The black sand is natural. Jet noise from LAX landings and takeoffs is constant and loud. Water quality is the main variable: check advisories before paddling out, especially after heavy rain.

Nearby Alternatives

El Porto sits just to the north and offers punchier, more consistent peaks for surfers ready to step up, though the crowd is noticeably heavier. Manhattan Beach and Hermosa Beach are further south and can offer cleaner conditions on the right swell.
