A mushier, more forgiving alternative to Campus Point, Devereux (also called Coal Oil Point) sits on the opposite side of Isla Vista and catches more swell but trades quality for consistency. WSW, W, and WNW swells under 15 seconds are the sweet spot, ideally with N or NE offshores keeping faces clean. Medium tide is best. Size range runs chest-high to double overhead before it starts to lose shape. Intermediate and advanced surfers will find the most here, though the wave's mellower sections make it accessible when conditions align. Bottom: rock. Season: October through February. Consistency: higher than Campus Point but expect a mushier, sectionier product. Watch for sneaky submerged rocks on the outer peak takeoff zone, and plan on dealing with kelp, tar on your feet, and tar on your wetsuit after most sessions.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Devereux draws a moderate crowd and is considered the most popular wave in the area. The vibe is welcoming and relaxed. Dawn patrol gives you the best chance of open peaks, especially on winter weekday mornings when the UCSB student population is occupied.

Access & Facilities

Park along Camino Majorca and walk to the beach. No major facilities at the break itself. Water is generally clean, though water quality drops after heavy rain. Expect tar on your feet and gear after most sessions, so bring a rag and a little coconut oil for cleanup.

Nearby Alternatives

Campus Point, a few minutes east, offers longer, higher-quality rights when the swell is pumping but is much more fickle. Further up the coast, Rincon handles larger, longer-period SW and NW swells that can overwhelm Devereux.
