A reliable Malibu-area beachbreak sitting just north of the LA County line, County Line punches above its looks with consistently bigger and colder water than the drive up PCH suggests. Best performance comes on W, SW, or S swells at mid tide, with NE offshores grooming the peaks. The north end cobblestone point is the standout section, lining up clean rights on W and SW, while a hollow, rock-littered left runs at the far north end for surfers comfortable threading shallow ground. Intermediate surfers will find the most reward here, though beginners gravitate to the inside beachbreak peaks, particularly on summer south swells. Bottom: sand and rock. Season: year-round with fall most reliable. Consistency: moderate to good on autumn and winter swells. Cross PCH carefully and keep an eye on parked-car break-ins.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

County Line is rarely uncrowded. Weekends draw heavy Valley and LA traffic, but the indistinct lineup spreads the crowd across multiple peaks, making waves achievable. Locals are described as cordial. Respect standard etiquette, don't drop in, and you'll get your share. Dawn patrol on weekdays is the obvious move if crowd pressure is a concern.

Access & Facilities

Park directly on PCH in front of Neptune's Net restaurant. The highway crossing is the primary hazard, watch traffic both ways. Car break-ins are a known issue, leave nothing visible. Neptune's Net is right there for post-session food, though it skews tourist-priced. Water quality is generally clean but degrades after rainfall.

Nearby Alternatives

When County Line is too crowded or too small, Zuma Beach to the south offers longer beachbreak peaks and more space, best caught early before onshore wind builds. Point Dume, also nearby, is a heavier, rockier option for confident surfers when a solid swell is running and you want something with more bite.
