Cottons Point is the mellow left-hander anchoring the north end of the Trestles complex, breaking further off the beach than Uppers or Lowers over a sand-and-cobblestone bottom. S and SW swells from shoulder-high to double-overhead get it working best, with an E wind to groom the face. Mid-to-low tide is optimal, and a long-period southerly with a minus low tide transforms the usually flat-faced wall into a punchy, high-performance wave with barrel sections and a crackable lip. The crowd skews all skill levels, and the lineup is generally cordial though competitive, particularly on weekends when the whole Trestles corridor fills up. Bottom: sand and cobblestone. Season: March through October, works year-round. Consistency: moderate. Pack light and secure your gear at the trailhead, car and backpack theft are real concerns, and after rain the water quality drops and rattlesnakes have been spotted near the lineup.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Cottons draws heavy crowds on weekends, but the vibe is described as hungry rather than hostile. It serves as a pressure valve for surfers looking to escape the intense competition at Uppers and Lowers, which keeps the energy a notch more relaxed. Longboarders in particular find it a natural fit. Dawn patrol midweek sessions are your best bet for space in the lineup.

Access & Facilities

Enter via San Onofre State Park or take the trail from the Cristianitos exit. Walk the trail to Uppers and continue north to reach the point. Note the active rail trestle crossing: trains move fast with little warning. Leave nothing visible in your car and do not leave valuables on the beach. Water quality is generally fair but degrades noticeably after rain.

Nearby Alternatives

When Cottons is too mushy or maxed out, Uppers and Lowers are a short walk south and handle a wider swell range with more defined performance sections. Church and Middles round out the Trestles cluster for days when you want variety without moving the car.
