Coronado delivers a punchy, often dumpy San Diego beachbreak that earns its reputation only when a steep, southerly hurricane swell fills in. Located on Coronado Island just a couple of miles north of the Tijuana Sloughs, the sandbars shift constantly and the wave runs short, with chest-high to overhead faces that hit fast and shut down just as quickly. S and SW swells are the ticket, NE offshores clean it up, and mid tide keeps the lip from collapsing immediately on the sand. Most days it is a closeout gauntlet suited to experienced surfers comfortable reading unpredictable peaks and managing currents. Bottom: sand. Season: late summer to autumn hurricane swells. Consistency: low to moderate outside of swell events. Water quality runs fair at best, notably worse after rain or sewage spills from the border, so check conditions before paddling out.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Crowds are moderate by San Diego standards, similar to any accessible city beachbreak on a weekend. Localism is manageable but present. Dawn patrol on weekdays cuts both crowd and aggro significantly. The lineup self-selects toward experienced surfers given the heavy closeout character, which keeps groms and beginners thinner.

Access & Facilities

Park in Coronado town and walk to the beach. Restrooms and parking are straightforward. Keep well clear of the military base boundary to avoid confrontations with MPs, a hazard that is both real and avoidable. After heavy rain, elevated fecal coliform from Tijuana Sloughs can push this stretch into unhealthy water-quality territory.

Nearby Alternatives

Ocean Beach and Mission Beach offer more consistent sandbars with less border-pollution exposure on a normal SW swell. If a solid S hurricane swell is running, Black's Beach and the reefs around La Jolla will also be firing and worth the drive north.
