A fickle but rewarding right-hand jetty wave, Corona del Mar sits just south of the Newport Harbor entrance in Orange County and is one of the last spots locals think to check. It demands a precise combination: a massive SW swell running at least double-overhead at Newport, a NE offshore wind to hold the face clean, and a mid tide to maximize ride length. When those three elements align, the tip of the jetty throws out a long, carvable right while the rest of the OC coastline closes out completely. On oversized W to NW swells, an inside finger jetty produces its own separate wave. Skill level should be intermediate at minimum, but genuine size brings genuine consequences. Bottom: sand and jetty. Season: March through October, with summer south swells the primary driver. Consistency: low. Come on the biggest SSW or S swells of the season and you will find a crowd that knows exactly what they are doing.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

When the conditions stack up, the people in the water know what they waited for. Crowd rating sits at moderate but the skill level compresses quickly on a proper double-overhead day. Localism is described as doable, not oppressive, but read the room. Giving respect in the lineup is straightforward protocol here.

Access & Facilities

Meter parking is available near the jetty. Water quality is rated fair and drops further after rainfall, so check recent rain totals before paddling out. The jetty structure itself is the main hazard on bigger days: getting pushed into the rocks during a hold-down is a real consequence. Wear a leash and stay aware of your position relative to the wall.

Nearby Alternatives

When Corona del Mar is too small or wind-blown, Newport Point to the north is the gold standard for the same swell window and outperforms on most days. Blackies and the Newport Beach Pier peaks offer more consistent, lower-consequence options when the swell is marginal.
