Cayucos Pier punches below its reputation on most days, sitting on California's Central Coast north of Morro Bay where a 1982 surf magazine made it look like a crispy right-hand barrel factory. It was not. The pier offers predominantly rights and lefts off the pilings on W and SW swell, waist-high to overhead, best at mid to high tide with NE offshores. The location earns points for sheltering from the prevailing N and NW winds, making it marginally warmer than neighboring breaks. Beginner to intermediate surfers will find enough to work with when it cooperates, and crowds stay manageable if you show up early on a weekday. Bottom: sand with scattered rocks to the south. Season: consistent from fall through spring. Consistency: fickle, a card-carrying member of the Central Coast's Fickle Spot Club. Watch for fishing lines off the pier and the occasional shark report in these cold Central Coast waters.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Moderate crowds, low localism. Humility and basic lineup etiquette are all that is asked. Weekday dawn patrol sessions will often leave you with the pier to yourself, which on a cooperating swell day is genuinely worth planning around.

Access & Facilities

Exit Highway 1 onto Cayucos Drive and head west straight into downtown. The pier is the obvious focal point and parking is straightforward. Food, water, and basic amenities are within walking distance. Water quality is clean. Cold water year-round on the Central Coast means a 4/3 is the baseline wetsuit, thicker in winter.

Nearby Alternatives

Morro Rock and Morro Strand to the south catch similar W and SW swell with more consistent beach peaks. San Simeon to the north offers a different exposure for NW groundswell when Cayucos is going flat.
