Carmel Beach delivers sandbar peaks along a half-mile crescent on the Monterey Peninsula, sheltered enough by kelp and headlands to stay glassy when the rest of the coast is blown out. Best with W, NW, or SW swell at waist-to-overhead size, mid-to-high incoming tide, and E or SE winds. The three main peaks at 4th, 8th, and 11th Streets shift constantly with the sandbars, offering rights and lefts across skill levels, though it reads intermediate to advanced when it gets serious. Crowds are moderate and the vibe is mostly mellow, though the lineup tightens when it's actually firing. Bottom: sand with some rock. Season: October through July most consistent, but can work year-round. Consistency: high when the swell cooperates. Watch the shorepound, it punches harder than the beach face suggests on overhead-plus days.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Generally mellow, but expect competition when it's actually good. Locals exist and will make their presence known when the surf is above average. Plenty of beach to spread out on smaller days, so positioning matters less when it's waist-high and fun. Dawn patrol gives you the best window before weekend crowds arrive, especially summer and holidays.

Access & Facilities

Park at the end of Ocean Avenue in Carmel. Street parking is free but fills fast on weekends and holidays. No facilities at the beach itself. Town is a short walk away with plenty of food and coffee. Water is clean. Water temps run cold year-round, typical Monterey upwelling, so a 4/3 is standard most of the year with a 3/2 possible only in the warmest late-summer window.

Nearby Alternatives

If Carmel is too small or messy, the beachbreak at Asilomar or the peaks along Spanish Bay to the north can offer different sand setups that respond to the same swell. The river-mouth setups south toward Big Sur fire on specific swells when size is up and conditions align.
