A long, grass-covered reef point in Cardiff-by-the-Sea produces a mellow, right-hand wave that rolls for roughly a quarter mile, making it one of San Diego County's most accessible longboard breaks. NW and W swells under 15 seconds are the target, with E or glassy winds and a low-to-mid tide sharpening the shape considerably. The south peak at Cardiff can push into genuine smoker territory on low tide during a solid winter swell, but most days it runs slow and forgiving. Beginners through intermediates make up the bulk of the crowd, and that crowd is substantial: weekdays are manageable, weekends are wall-to-wall logs and SUPs. Bottom: reef and reef-point. Season: November through March. Consistency: reliable, picks up most NW groundswell moving down the coast. Avoid the water entirely after heavy rain, when the San Elijo Lagoon drains into the lineup and has been directly linked to ear infections and serious intestinal illness.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Cardiff Reef is chronically crowded on weekends, dominated by longboarders and SUPs. Suckouts gets saturated at ten surfers and stops being worth it. Weekday dawns are the move. Localism is present but manageable. The forecast services crowd rating is 4/5, locals are out there, and hassling does happen, so read the lineup before paddling into the mix.

Access & Facilities

A pay parking lot sits directly in front of the point off Highway 101. Free parking is available just outside the lot gates along the highway. The wave is visible from the highway in both directions. San Elijo State Beach campground is adjacent. Avoid the water after rain events and watch for posted warning signs near the lagoon outlet.

Nearby Alternatives

When Cardiff is maxed out or washed out after rain, Swami's just to the south offers a more defined right-hand reef point with a different crowd dynamic. Oceanside Pier can fill in on smaller NW swells if you're willing to drive north.
