Capitola delivers a soft, forgiving right-hand reef-and-sand point on the south end of the Santa Cruz coast, drawing everyone from first-timers to seasoned longboarders year-round. The main peak at 2nd Jetty works on S, SSW, and W swells from around 2ft and holds shape past 8ft, while a steeper, shorter left peels off the back toward 1st Jetty. NW and N winds or glass keep faces clean, mid-tide is the sweet spot before low tide exposes the rocks. Beginners and longboarders dominate the lineup, especially summer weekends when the crowd swells to a full party. Bottom: rocky reef and sand. Season: summer and autumn best, some swell year-round. Consistency: reliable. On big days, errant longboards become a genuine hazard, so give learners extra space and stay alert in the inside section.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Summer weekends are genuinely packed, and the volume of beginners makes the water chaotic rather than heavy. The vibe is welcoming and family-oriented, but standard priority rules apply. Dawn patrol on weekday mornings is the clearest window. Patience in the lineup pays off.

Access & Facilities

Street parking near the beach fills quickly in summer. When meters are full, follow public parking signs up the hill to the overflow lot. Restrooms, food, and rentals are walkable from the beach. Water quality is generally clean but can dip after rain. Watch for rocks on entry and exit.

Nearby Alternatives

When Capitola is blown out or maxed, Pleasure Point a short drive north offers more structured reef sections for stronger surfers. Cowells Beach, also in Santa Cruz, is another long right point when the swell is small.
