A sand-bottom beachbreak at the mouth of Bolinas Lagoon, roughly 30 miles north of San Francisco, that occasionally produces genuinely fun waves but demands patience and flexible scheduling to catch on a good day. S and SW swells are the primary drivers, with big NW groundswells also pushing waves through when bars align correctly. N or NE winds keep it clean, and the window is narrow: mid to high tide is when the shape tightens up, because low tide tends to drain the life out of already soft sandbars. The lagoon mouth splits into two distinct setups: the Sea Drift Road side throws up short rights, while the Wharf and Brighton Road side produces lefts. Small to overhead is the realistic range, and it needs to stay on the smaller end to be genuinely rideable. Beginners and intermediates will find the most here. Bottom: sand. Season: year-round but inconsistent. Consistency: low-moderate. Park early on weekends or plan a serious walk from the Mesa.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Localism is real but manageable. The lineups fill up fast on good days, and weekends in particular can get thick. Locals are protective when the waves are actually firing, which is infrequent enough that the energy can spike when a solid swell hits. Respect the lineup, wait your turn, and avoid posturing. A dawn patrol midweek session will always be the less stressful option.

Access & Facilities

From Highway 1, take Olema-Bolinas Road and follow it into town. For the Wharf side, turn right on Brighton Ave. Parking is genuinely difficult: street signs pointing to Bolinas have historically been removed by locals, and the town keeps a limited supply of legal spaces. Police ticket aggressively in no-parking zones. On weekends, expect to park on the Mesa and walk half a mile or more to the beach. No major facilities at the beach itself.

Nearby Alternatives

If Bolinas is not cooperating, Stinson Beach a few miles south offers more consistent beach peaks and is worth checking in the same swell window. Rodeo Beach or Cronkhite to the south also pick up similar swell and can be a useful barometer before committing to the drive.
