Pound for pound, Blacks ranks among the heaviest beach breaks in California, a consequence of the La Jolla submarine canyons dragging deep water directly into shallow shore, producing a sudden, violent slab of hollow energy on the southern San Diego coastline. It fires on SW to NW swells in the 4-12ft range, with low to mid tide keeping the lip pitching hard and fast. Offshore winds from the east hold the face clean, but this wave does not need perfect conditions to punish you. Late drops are mandatory here, not optional: unless you commit fully, the wave simply passes you by or throws you over. Sneaker sets arrive with little warning and can hold even experienced surfers down. Bottom: sand. Season: Sept through March for reliable groundswell. Consistency: moderate to high when swell is running. Bring a board with enough volume to handle the drop, because a small twin fin will leave you swimming more than surfing.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekends are ultra-crowded. Localism is real and has turned physical when visitors drop in on established locals. Some of San Diego's best surfers call this place home. Keep your head down, wait your turn, do not drop in on anyone who clearly knows the lineup, and you will be tolerated. Dawn patrol on weekdays is the only honest way to find breathing room at the main peaks.

Access & Facilities

Access is via the Torrey Pines Glider Port, with a trail down to the beach. The trail is unmistakable and the walk is manageable, which explains the crowds. No formal surf facilities on the beach. Water quality can vary after rain. The beach is clothing-optional, which surprises first-timers. Park fees apply at the glider port lot.

Nearby Alternatives

When Blacks is maxed out or the lineups are unworkable, Scripps Pier to the south picks up similar swell and offers a different crowd dynamic. Windansea is another La Jolla option for surfers comfortable with reef, running on similar NW swell windows and offshore conditions.
