Peaky sandbars wedged between the 28th Street jetty and Newport Pier define Blackies, a Newport Beach beach break with a split personality shaped by season and swell size. Short-period WSW and W swells from 3 to 8ft activate the best peaks, with NE offshores cleaning up the face. Low to mid tide produces the sharpest, hollower sections, while all tides can work depending on sandbar configuration. The wave runs shorter than most Newport breaks but packs surprising punch when a solid NW swell fills in during winter. Best season is autumn, when a mix of south and west swells combines with favorable winds. Bottom: sand, jetty-fed bars. Season: autumn peak, winter for size. Consistency: moderate. Midweek dawn patrol is the move to avoid the weekend circus that defines this spot.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

This is the center of Newport's logging scene and it shows. Weekends are ultra-crowded. A decades-old hierarchy exists in the lineup, though the sheer volume of surfers dilutes serious localism. Respect established pecking order, don't snake, and consider weekday early mornings to find any elbow room.

Access & Facilities

Paid parking is available nearby. Paddle out between the pier and the jetty. Watch for pier supports and scattered rocks near the pilings. Water quality is generally clean except after heavy rainstorms when runoff degrades conditions. Food and services are walkable along the Newport Beach boardwalk.

Nearby Alternatives

When Blackies is maxed out or too crowded, the peaks at 54th Street and 56th Street to the north offer relief with similar beach break character. The Wedge at the south end of the Balboa Peninsula handles serious swell and delivers bodysurf-grade shorebreak when conditions align.
