A fickle but rewarding NW-facing beachbreak along the Sea Ranch subdivision, Black Point works best when everywhere else is too small. Optimal conditions are SE to S wind with NW, W, or SW swell in the 2-6ft range at mid tide. The point itself shields the break from SE wind, giving it clean, punchy a-frame peaks when most of the Sonoma Coast is blown out or flat. It suits beginners through intermediates and rarely draws more than a handful of surfers, making it a low-pressure session even on weekends. Bottom: sand. Season: winter through early spring, with some summer-fall windows. Consistency: moderate, fickle by nature. Getting out through the shorebreak can be a genuine workout when size pushes toward the upper end, so read the sets carefully before paddling.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Crowd levels here are genuinely low. The quarter-mile walk from the parking lot filters out casual visitors, and the Sea Ranch location keeps it remote for most Bay Area surfers. The local vibe is welcoming, so respect the quiet nature of the spot and keep the lineup low-key.

Access & Facilities

Pull off Highway 1 at milepost 50.8 and pay the $3 parking fee before you walk. The paddle-out can be tough when the surf is up, so enter where the shorebreak is most manageable. There are no facilities at the break itself. Water is clean, no significant hazards, and the bluff-top walk adds some scenery to the scout.

Nearby Alternatives

When Black Point is too small or the swell is too big to paddle out, Mystos and the nearby reef breaks farther north along the Sonoma Coast handle more size. Fort Ross Reef picks up big S swells well and offers a meatier session for surfers ready to step up.
