A river-maintained gravelly sandbar gives Big Sur Rivermouth a semi-point setup on California's remote central coast, sitting inside Andrew Molera State Park. The river flow keeps the bar aligned correctly, producing fast, thin rights and shorter, mushier lefts that funnel into the rivermouth itself. Best at head-high and under, the rights can line up cleanly with a taut lip to whack and, occasionally, a section tight enough to tuck under. The surrounding topography blocks almost every wind direction except west, meaning offshore conditions are near-constant and the spot is the most reliable wave in all of Big Sur. Bottom: sand and rock. Season: June through October. Consistency: moderate but heavily dependent on swell size and bar alignment. Watch the currents hard: this place can turn honeycombed with rips that carry you well down the beach from the peak, and the bar goes closed-out shallow without warning.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Five surfers in the lineup qualifies as a crowd here, and that happens regularly given the reliable offshores. Local vibe is genuinely intimidating. Don't push your luck in the peak zone before you've read the room. Respect goes a long way, entitlement gets remembered.

Access & Facilities

Head north on Highway 1 from San Simeon and follow the signs for Andrew Molera State Park. Park entry fees apply. Expect a walk to the beach. Bring your own water and food. Water quality is clean except immediately after heavy rainfall when river runoff degrades conditions. Sharks are a real and documented hazard in this stretch of the California coast.

Nearby Alternatives

When Big Sur Rivermouth closes out or the swell is too small, other breaks scattered along Highway 1 can pick up more open-ocean energy. Garrapata and other north-facing coves in the region respond differently to swell direction and are worth scouting if you have a vehicle.
