A working-person's reef peak tucked between Swamis and Cardiff Reef on North San Diego County's wave-rich stretch of coast, Beacons punches above its reputation on the right day. W and NW swells from 3-6ft activate the outside reef, producing distinct left and right peaks off a flat rock bottom with sand and sea grass patches. E and NE offshores clean it up, and the Santa Ana windows in autumn are the prime target. The lineup suits intermediate to advanced surfers on most days, though it draws a wide mix when small: beginners on the inside, experienced regulars working the outside sets. Bottom: flat rock reef. Season: October through April, with summer S swells a bonus. Consistency: year-round, including local wind swell when Swamis and Cardiff go flat. Beacons also absorbs urban runoff from multiple outflow sources, so avoid the water for 72 hours after heavy winter rain.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Beacons is rarely empty. Lifelong local families, shortboarders, longboarders, and learners all share the water, which keeps the vibe manageable but the peak competitive. Dawn patrol on weekdays is the clearest path to breathing room. Respect the locals who grew up here and you'll be fine, but expect to wait your turn on anything resembling a good swell.

Access & Facilities

Park in the main lot off Neptune Ave. Or along the street. A short path leads directly to the beach. Bring your own water. The area suffers from urban runoff typical of the Carlsbad-to-Del Mar corridor, so check water quality reports after rain before paddling out.

Nearby Alternatives

When Beacons is too small or too crowded, Swamis a couple of kilometres north picks up swell more efficiently and rewards patience with longer right-hand walls. Cardiff Reef to the south offers a similar reef setup with slightly different swell exposure and is worth checking on the same run.
