Three distinct breaks spread across a wide state beach on the Monterey Peninsula, Asilomar is exposed to almost every swell direction and holds waves from waist-high to overhead-plus year-round. W, NW, N, and SW swells all find the beach, with E and SE offshores cleaning things up. Low to incoming mid tide is the sweet spot across all three peaks. Roadsides, the north-end right, starts close to shore and shifts further outside as size builds. Middles throws up a punchy peak over a shallow sandbar that can get ledgy and wedgy on the right day. The south-end Reef section is a left that bowls hard up to around 8ft, followed by a bowling right once it maxes out. This stretch consistently runs bigger than most spots in the Monterey area, handles up to 12ft, and earns its reputation as one of the more challenging beach breaks in North Central California. Bottom: sand with some rock sections. Season: year-round. Consistency: reliable, swell-exposed coast.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays are relatively quiet. Weekends draw crowds, especially when it's good. The local crew is tight, well-known to each other, and not immediately welcoming to strangers. Forecasts rate the vibe as intimidating. Sit wide, wait your turn, don't snake, and let a few sets pass before you start asserting position. Being patient in a new lineup is always the right call here.

Access & Facilities

Parking runs along Sunset Drive on the coastal road south of Cannery Row. The Asilomar State Beach sign is visible from the road. Easy road-side access. No significant paddle-out channel tricks needed, but be aware of submerged rocks near the north end when paddling out. Hazards include sharks (Monterey is active white shark habitat) and big surf that can exceed 12ft on major swells. Water quality is clean.

Nearby Alternatives

If Asilomar is maxed out or closing out, Carmel Beach to the south picks up similar swell with a slightly more sheltered angle and a different crowd. Moss Landing to the north offers a contrasting sandspit setup that can hold cleaner shape when direct W swell is too much for open beach breaks.
