A wedging cliff-bounce right tucked inside a sheltered cove on the San Mateo County coast, roughly 20 miles north of Santa Cruz on Highway 1. The wave forms when S, SW, or long-period W swells reflect off the stone walls, producing a hollow, powerful A-frame with a bowly right that can be very good on its day. NW and E winds blow offshore here, which also means persistent upwelling keeps this the coldest water in Northern California. Plan for 4/3 or 5/4 with booties year-round. Best at incoming to high tide for the cliff-bounce effect, though low-to-mid can work on the right swell. Intermediate to advanced surfers only. Bottom: sand and rock. Season: year-round, but fickle. Consistency: medium. This is the southernmost point of the Red Triangle, elephant seal and sea lion breeding territory, and active great white shark habitat. Do not paddle out to the outside reefs unless you have made peace with the risk.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Santa Cruz locals treat this as their backyard and can be territorial, especially on busy weekends. The takeoff zone is compact, which compresses the lineup fast. Localism is real but manageable if you surf well, wait your turn, and don't drop in. Dawn patrol midweek during summer minimizes friction. Don't flash the spot.

Access & Facilities

Paid State Park entry off Highway 1. Leave the car in the designated lot and walk in. Restrooms on site. Parking lot has a history of break-ins, so leave nothing visible in the car. Water is clean. No food or rental infrastructure at the break itself.

Nearby Alternatives

When Año Nuevo is maxed out or the crowd is unbearable, San Gregorio to the north offers a punchier beachbreak peak on medium-high tide with E wind. Waddell Creek to the south picks up a broader swell window. Princeton Breakwater near Half Moon Bay is a good storm-day option when S winds clean things up.
