A-frame wedges that can deliver top-to-bottom barrels define Anderson Street in Surfside, a small stretch of Orange County beach that punches well above its size when the sand aligns. Quality here is almost entirely dependent on S groundswell refracting off the Huntington Harbor jetty and sandbars that are in constant flux, so you can show up on a flat, featureless beach one week and find a grinding wedge the next. E winds are ideal, summer NW winds typically kill it by mid-morning, so dawn patrol is non-negotiable from June through September. The wave suits confident intermediates and up, with hollow, fast-breaking sections and notorious rip currents demanding strong paddle fitness and wave reading ability. Bottom: shifting sand. Season: summer through early autumn. Consistency: fickle. Check the tide carefully: low to mid is the window, as high tide generates ugly backwash and a dropping tide can fire up vicious rips that make the paddle-out a serious workout.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekends can get busy with a talented local crew who know exactly when to paddle out. Weekday sessions, especially early mornings, are noticeably quieter. Localism is manageable: the vibe is generally decent, but the locals have this spot completely wired and they'll be on the best waves before you work out which bank is firing. Respect the lineup and wait your turn.

Access & Facilities

Free parking is available close to the beach off Anderson Street, accessed from Pacific Coast Highway in Sunset Beach. Water quality is a genuine concern: Huntington Harbor boat traffic and occasional sewage spills make this a dirty lineup. Rinse off thoroughly. Great White sharks have been documented near the harbor mouth, which is worth keeping in mind on dawn patrol sessions when light is low.

Nearby Alternatives

When Anderson Street is too big or too messy, Huntington Beach a few miles south offers more consistent beach peaks across a range of sizes. Seal Beach to the north can absorb swells that squeeze past the harbor and occasionally turns on when Anderson is too maxed out.
