Aliso Creek is a fickle shorebreak wedge in Laguna Beach, Orange County, that surfs on hard-packed sand close to shore. It needs a true S or SW swell, low tide, and an E wind to produce anything rideable, and even then functional sandbar formation is the biggest variable. Head-high to overhead is the sweet spot, but those sessions are rare, maybe a handful of times per year. The wave suits confident, fast-twitch surfers comfortable pulling into close-out barrels directly on the sand. Bodyboarders and skimboarders dominate the lineup most days. Bottom: sand. Season: summer and autumn, especially during tropical swell pulses. Consistency: very low. If you're not comfortable with neck-snapping shorebreak that delivers zero shoulder burn and maximum consequence, skip this one and check the reefs up the coast toward Laguna instead.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The lineup is mellow most of the time because the wave is barely surfable on an average day. When it does turn on, a tight underground crew of skilled locals materialises quickly and the talent level jumps noticeably. Tourists with boogie boards are a constant, drawn by the rare beachfront parking. Respect the locals who have put in the time cracking the code here.

Access & Facilities

Beachfront parking directly on the sand makes access as easy as it gets in Orange County. Facilities are standard beach-park level. Water quality is fair and drops after winter rain when the creek flushes runoff, though the low annual rainfall in Laguna Beach keeps contamination events infrequent.

Nearby Alternatives

When Aliso Creek is doing nothing, the reef breaks heading north toward Laguna Beach offer more dependable shape and cleaner water. South toward Dana Point, Doheny and Salt Creek provide more consistent sand and reef options across a wider swell window.
