A rare reef break amid miles of San Diego beachbreak, 15th Street in Del Mar punches above its weight when neighboring beaches close out. Optimal in W, NW, or SW swell at shoulder-high to 3ft overhead, with offshore E winds keeping it clean. Low tide sharpens the reef, steepening the left into a fast, lining wall capable of three or four turns, high tide softens things and activates the inside sandbars to the north and south. The crowd is mellow and the vibe welcoming, making it a realistic option for surfers of most ability levels. Bottom: reef and sand. Season: year-round, more consistent in winter. Consistency: medium, better than adjacent beaches on size or low-tide days. Avoid surfing near the rivermouth after significant rain, as water quality degrades sharply.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Localism is minimal and the lineup is generally welcoming. On busy days, peaks to the north and south along the beach offer an easy escape, though those sandbars can't handle real size or a low tide. Dawn patrol any day of the week is a reasonable strategy. Note summer surfing and swimming zone restrictions on beaches north of 15th Street.

Access & Facilities

Park the paid lot directly across the street or find free street parking a short walk north. A well-kept grassy park sits atop the cliff above the left with a loading zone offering a direct view of the lineup. The walk in is straightforward: through the park and down the path to the sand. Water is clean outside of post-rain periods near the rivermouth.

Nearby Alternatives

When 15th is flat or too small, the beachbreaks running south toward La Jolla or north toward Cardiff and Seaside Reef provide options across a range of conditions. Cardiff Reef and Swami's are both within a short drive north and handle similar swell windows with more defined structure.
