A reef and beach combo on the Costa Brava that only wakes up when a strong S or SE swell pushes into the bay, Platja de Sant Salvador sits north of Sant Feliu de Guixols in a mountain-backed cove that filters out messy onshore wind, meaning it can be glassy when exposed spots are blown out. The reef section, sitting roughly 100m offshore, starts producing rideable lines from around 3ft and can hold faces up to 8ft on exceptional swells. Beach break peaks activate on smaller, punchier days. The wave suits intermediates looking for something quieter than the busier Catalan setups, with weekday crowds reportedly near zero and only a handful of surfers on weekends. Bottom: reef and beach mixed. Season: autumn through early spring when Mediterranean storm swells generate enough energy. Consistency: low to moderate, the break is fickle and has reportedly never fully recovered after a major storm reshaped the seabed some years back. Check conditions carefully before making a dedicated trip, this is a bonus spot, not a primary destination.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays the lineup is essentially empty. Weekends draw a small local crew but pressure stays low compared to most accessible Spanish breaks. The relaxed atmosphere reflects the spot's inconsistency, when it does fire, respect the handful of regulars who've put in the time watching it.

Access & Facilities

Drive to Sant Feliu de Guixols and follow signs toward Sant Pol. Basic facilities in town. No dedicated surf infrastructure at the beach itself, so bring your own water and check forecasts in advance. The rocky reef entry requires care at low tide.

Nearby Alternatives

When Sant Salvador is flat or messy, the broader Costa Brava coastline has beach breaks around Palamós and La Fosca that catch similar S and SE swells. Tossa de Mar can also offer protected conditions when Mediterranean swells push through.
