A sand-bar break tucked between the port and pier at Puerto Cabopino, on the Costa del Sol between Calahonda and Elviria, Malaga. It comes alive in winter when easterly winds push 1.5-2m swells into the bay, producing steep-set lefts off the right side of the bay that soften into longer, flowing walls as they unwind. SW to W winds clean it up nicely in those conditions. Tide matters on the shallow bar, with mid tide generally the most workable. The spot suits intermediates and up in winter swell, though it mellows enough for progressing surfers on smaller days. Bottom: sand-bar. Season: Oct-Mar. Consistency: moderate, weather-window dependent. Localism is real here: the small winter crew takes ownership seriously, so introduce yourself, wait your turn, and respect the priority rotation before paddling into sets.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Winter keeps the crowd tight, typically 10 surfers or fewer. Summer swells the lineup to 50-plus, mixing tourists, learners, and competing shortboarders in a small break. Localism is moderate but present. The home crew notices attitude fast. A friendly hello on the beach goes a long way, dropping in without acknowledgment goes the other way just as fast.

Access & Facilities

Park at Puerto Cabopino marina. The break sits between the port wall and the pier, so it is easy to find on foot from the car park. Rentals are available in nearby Calahonda and Marbella if you need a board. Water quality is generally acceptable but check after heavy rain given proximity to the port.

Nearby Alternatives

When Cabopino is too small or blown out, Playa de Cabopino's open beach can pick up stray swell on the right wind. Further west toward Marbella, La Cala and Calahonda have similar sand-bar setups that respond to the same easterly swells and are worth checking on the same run.
