Son Bou is one of Menorca's most consistent beachbreaks, a 3 km stretch of south-facing sand that lights up when E to S swells push through the Mediterranean between October and April. It picks up E, SE, and S swell energy well, though SW swells are largely blocked by Mallorca sitting to the west. Offshore winds are northerly, which align naturally with the island's winter weather patterns. Peaks form across the beach as punchy, fast, occasionally hollow a-frames that suit intermediates comfortable reading shifting sandbars. Crowds are minimal in winter, the spot's prime window, but the beach fills with tourists in summer when surf essentially disappears. Bottom: sand. Season: Oct to Apr. Consistency: medium. Bring a 3/2 or 4/3 depending on month, and check conditions after any recent storm system since swell events here are weather-dependent and short-lived.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Empty in winter, which is precisely when it works. Summer brings heavy tourist traffic but virtually no surf. On the rare winter swell that does fire, the accessible car park means the lineup fills quickly. No notable localism reported. Sharing the beach with kite surfers is common given the length of the shoreline.

Access & Facilities

Park in the beach car park. No facilities on site. Lifeguards are absent from November through April, so self-rescue awareness matters. Water quality is clean. The beach is long enough that surfers and kite surfers can spread out without conflict.

Nearby Alternatives

When Son Bou is flat or too onshore, check other south-facing Menorca beaches that may catch a different wind angle or marginally more swell. Mallorca, visible on clear days across the channel, has a broader swell window and more established surf spots worth investigating if you have transport.
