A short, punchy beachbreak on Mallorca's southwest coast, Cala Major sits close enough to Palma that it draws a crowd the moment any swell shows up. It needs a solid S to WSW push, at least 3ft, to get going, and the window is narrow enough that good days are genuinely rare. When the stars align in autumn or winter, the beach throws up some hollow sections and occasional small barrels worth scoring. Beginners and intermediates make up most of the lineup, but the compressed beach and proximity to the city mean it gets uncomfortably busy on weekends, sometimes 25-plus surfers on a short stretch of sand. Bottom: beach. Season: October through February. Consistency: low. Arrive early on any swell forecast or accept that the lineup will be a circus by mid-morning. A fun wave when it works, but don't build a trip around it.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Urban proximity means this place never really empties. Weekend crowds can hit ultra-crowded conditions fast. Localism is not a reported issue, and the vibe is generally relaxed, but 25 surfers on a sub-50m beachbreak is still a tight squeeze. Dawn patrol on weekday swells is the obvious play.

Access & Facilities

Situated close to Palma, access is straightforward. Paid parking is available. A lifeguard is on duty seasonally. Residential surroundings mean some low-level water quality concerns after rain. No surf shops on the beach, so bring everything you need from Palma.

Nearby Alternatives

When Cala Major is flat or blown out, the more exposed stretches on Mallorca's north coast pick up Tramontana-driven swell and can offer more powerful, less crowded options. For consistent beachbreak on smaller swells, check the island's more sheltered bays on the same S-SW swell window.
