A compact beach break on Asturias's central coast, Xivares sits between Gijón and Avilés where Atlantic swells wrap into a bay sheltered enough to hold shape at low to mid tide. It needs at least 1 to 1.5m of swell to get going and handles up to 2m-plus before things get messy. Offshore winds from the south keep faces clean, the predominant NW to W Atlantic swell window is well suited to this stretch of coast. The right-side peaks tend to offer the best shape, with short punchy walls rarely stretching beyond 50m, though a solid swell can push rides out to 150m. Strong rip currents run through the lineup and deserve respect from every ability level. Weekdays stay quiet enough for a relaxed session, but summer weekends see the car park fill early and the peaks crowd up fast. Bottom: sand. Season: autumn and winter. Consistency: moderate. Arrive early on weekends, particularly in July and August, to secure parking and space in the lineup.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekday sessions are genuinely quiet with only a handful of surfers in the water. Weekends flip that dynamic entirely, especially through summer, when the lineup fills with a mix of locals and visitors from Gijón and Avilés. No heavy localism reported, but standard respect applies: don't snake peaks and don't overcrowd the better right-side sections.

Access & Facilities

From Gijón, take the old road toward Avilés and follow signs toward Candás and Luanco. The Xivares turn-off is signed but easy to miss, so watch carefully on the right side. A car park sits directly in front of the beach but fills in summer. Bring water, facilities are limited outside peak season.

Nearby Alternatives

When Xivares is maxed out or blown out, the beaches around Candás and Luanco offer similar NW swell exposure with comparable bank setups. Gijón's Playa de San Lorenzo is a short drive east and works across a wider tide and swell range if you need more options.
