A reasonably quiet beachbreak on Asturias's northwest-facing coast, Verdicio offers consistent peaks within easy reach of Avilés and Gijón without the crowds those cities generate. W to N swells in the 3-8ft range are the sweet spot, with low to mid tide producing the cleanest, most defined walls across several peaks. SE winds keep the faces groomed. Intermediates will find plenty of room to work, since the lineup stays calm even on weekends when nearby urban beaches pack out. Rocky outcrops scattered through the sand help shape sandbars that hold form better than a flat-bottomed beach normally would. Bottom: sand with rock outcrops. Season: Oct-Mar for most consistent swell energy. Consistency: medium, though the W-facing exposure means it catches swell when spots oriented elsewhere go flat. Arrive at low tide on a mid-size W swell and you'll have the pick of multiple peaks with breathing room between surfers.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Despite sitting between two sizeable cities, Verdicio stays relatively uncrowded. Weekend mornings bring a few more surfers out from Gijón and Avilés, but the multiple peaks spread the lineup thin. Localism is not flagged as a concern. Standard lineup etiquette is all that's needed.

Access & Facilities

Paid parking is available on-site. A lifeguard operates in season. Pollution is not a concern. The rocky outcrops are the main hazard, check the beach at low tide before paddling out to identify the reef sections.

Nearby Alternatives

When Verdicio is too small or closing out, the long dune-backed beach at Salinas stretches a few kilometres south and picks up more swell across a wider tidal range. On the biggest NW swells, the rivermouth lefthander at the regional standout further west in Asturias is worth the drive.
