A-frame beachbreak peaks and a rivermouth left make San Antolin one of the more reliable stretches of surf on the Asturian coast, sitting just off the N-632 between Llanes and Ribadesella. W to N swells fill in from autumn through spring, with S to SW winds going offshore. Mid to low tide tends to sharpen the peaks, though the sandbars shift constantly, so conditions vary week to week. Intermediate surfers can find plenty of workable walls across the bay, while the more powerful sections and deeper rivermouth peaks suit experienced surfers better. Crowds are light most of the year but summer weekends can see more bodies in the water, particularly at the western end near the lifeguard post. Bottom: beach. Season: September through April. Consistency: high. Bring a fish or mid-length for the smaller autumn swells, and a step-up shortboard when the Atlantic turns on 6ft-plus sets in winter.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Generally uncrowded outside summer weekends, though locals from Gijón make the drive when conditions are on. Summer months draw beach-goers and more surfers to the western facilities end. Dawn patrol mid-week in autumn and winter gives you the peaks largely to yourself. The highway proximity keeps the picnic crowds down year-round.

Access & Facilities

Visible directly from the N-632, parking is free roadside. A lifeguard operates at the western end during summer. No surf rental facilities on the beach, so bring your own kit. Water quality is generally clean, but use judgment after significant rainfall given the rivermouth.

Nearby Alternatives

When San Antolin is too small or the banks are poor, the long dune-backed beaches around Ribadesella to the west offer more swell exposure and consistent peaks. On big winter swells, the powerful reefbreaks scattered along this coastline come alive and are worth exploring if you have the skills to match.
