A north-facing beachbreak on the Galician coast of northwest Spain, San Cosme delivers powerful, punchy peaks along a long stretch of sand leading to the Foz rivermouth. It picks up W-N swell reliably across all tides, running best from autumn through spring when Atlantic groundswells stack up. Size range is 3-8ft, and the wave generates fast, hollow sections on overhead-plus swells. All skill levels can find something here, though the powerful beach can surprise beginners when size arrives. Bottom: sandy beach. Season: September through April. Consistency: very consistent, around 150 surf days per year. Bring a versatile shortboard and arrive at dawn on weekends to claim a peak before the campervan crowd sets up camp for the week. The alternative name Barreiros applies to the same stretch, so check both when researching conditions.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Multiple peaks prevent the crowd from bottling up on one takeoff zone, but this beach is a known campervan hub so expect mixed ability surfers at all times. Summer brings beachgoers and parking becomes a genuine problem when vans don't move for days. Autumn through early spring gives the best combination of swell and manageable crowds. Localism is not a major reported issue, though basic lineup etiquette applies.

Access & Facilities

Easy to find with a car park directly at the beach. No long walk required. Bars, good beach facilities, and several campsites sit close by, making this a comfortable base. The spot sits far enough from the Foz rivermouth that pollution is not a reported concern. Hazards are minimal but watch for rip currents on larger swells, as with any exposed beachbreak.

Nearby Alternatives

When San Cosme is small or blown out, Reinante to the east offers fast, hollow sections on the right swell direction. Playa de Frouxeira further down the Galician coast is a longer arcing beach with excellent quality peaks worth the extra drive on solid NW swells.
