A beach break just north of Playa América on the Galician coast, Patos picks up swell reliably and works across a wide size range, from waist-high runners to well-overhead walls when proper Atlantic pulses push in. Best in W to NW swells with offshore winds from the E or SE. Mid tide typically organises the sandbars into defined peaks, while low tide can expose shallower sections with a bit more punch. The break suits all skill levels on paper, but weekend and summer crowds make it a very different animal: locals report 50-plus surfers on the better peaks and aggression in the lineup on good days. Weekday dawn sessions in autumn or winter are the honest move. Bottom: sand. Season: autumn through spring. Consistency: moderate to good. Pack patience on any swell above 2ft at the weekend, or walk the beach to find a quieter reform peak away from the main crowd.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

This is one of the busiest beaches in Spain by some accounts. Weekends and summer holidays bring hundreds of surfers into the water across multiple peaks. Locals can be territorial on the better peaks. Arrive early, be respectful, and manage expectations. If the main peaks are a zoo, the beach reforms are your fallback.

Access & Facilities

Easy access via the coast road north of Playa América, just outside Vigo. Parking is straightforward on weekdays but gets overwhelmed in summer and holiday periods. Facilities including food and services are nearby in the surrounding area given the urban setting. Water quality is worth checking given proximity to Vigo.

Nearby Alternatives

Monte Ferro's left and the spot known locally as Prado offer nearby options when Patos is maxed out or simply too crowded to function. When proper swell fills in, the wider Galician coastline north and south of Vigo has additional beach and point options worth exploring.
