A quality beachbreak on Galicia's Costa da Morte that shelters from W swells and SW winds, needing medium to large NW-N swell to really wake up. NW to N swell at 3-8ft with a southerly offshore and low to mid tide is the sweet spot. On those days it can deliver fast, long rides up to 300m on a good day, though normal rides run short. Intermediate to expert surfers will find the most here, but be aware: when it's on, it gets crowded and localism has been known to surface. Bottom: beach. Season: autumn through winter. Consistency: medium. Watch for occasional pollution and check sandbars before paddling out, as banks shift with each swell cycle and the quality varies peak to peak.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Malpica gets busy, particularly when it's pumping and other spots in the area are too small. Localism flares up occasionally. Weekends draw the heaviest crowds. Dawn patrol sessions mid-week in autumn give you the best chance of a less competitive lineup. Respect the locals.

Access & Facilities

Malpica is a small fishing village with good beach facilities and free parking that rarely fills up. Camping is available nearby. Slight pollution has been noted, so check conditions after heavy rain. The Costa da Morte coastline has numerous other breaks within a short drive.

Nearby Alternatives

If Malpica is too small or too crowded, the broader Galicia coastline has several options. Pantin is the most consistent spot in the region and handles NW swell well. Frouxeira offers long arcing peaks and excellent quality when NW swell is running.
