A hollow, fast beachbreak tucked into a half-moon bay near Valdovino in Northwest Spain, Campelo delivers consistent barrel sections that punch above the weight of most Galician beaches. It picks up W to N swell cleanly, works best at low to mid tide, and offshore SE winds groom the faces nicely. The peak throws up both lefts and rights, though quality depends on ever-shifting sandbars. Intermediate to advanced surfers will find plenty here, but beginners should think hard before paddling out when size builds, because the rip on the left side of the bay runs hard through the channel and can push you straight into a serious lineup fast. Bottom: sand. Season: September through March. Consistency: high, firing even on sub-1m swells. Weekends and summer bring crowds, and parking tightens up, so an early weekday session in autumn is the smart play when swell is running.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Crowded on weekends and through summer, with parking difficulties adding friction. Reports flag possible localism when the spot is busy. Respect the lineup, be patient rotating into peaks, and consider dawn patrol or midweek sessions in September through November to find it less contested.

Access & Facilities

Campelo is signposted but easy to miss coming from Ferrol. Watch for the Playa de Campelo turn, bear right at the second junction. Free parking is available but fills on busy days. A lifeguard and showers are on site. The cliffs shelter the bay and provide a good place to read the lineup before paddling out.

Nearby Alternatives

Pantin, the most consistent spot in Galicia and host to an annual pro contest, sits nearby and handles similar swell windows with multiple quality peaks. Frouxeira offers a long arcing beach with excellent, consistent peaks if Campelo's banks are off. Both are worth checking on the same run.
