A fast, hollow right wedge off the western cliffs of a small sandy cove near Sagres, Zavial is the most celebrated wave on the Algarve's south coast. It fires on SW to NW swell at 3-8ft, needs mid to high tide to avoid closing out, and runs best with a NE or N wind keeping the face clean. The wave peels along sand-covered reef, pitching hard off the cliff base with a steep take-off that rewards commitment. Suited to intermediate and advanced surfers who can handle a wedgy, occasionally sectiony wall in a lineup that is consistently competitive. Bottom: mixed sand and reef. Season: September through April. Consistency: medium, fickle sandbar dependent. The point is not visible from the car park, so walk out to the rocks to check conditions before suiting up, especially as the window can be short on an incoming tide.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

This is the busiest wave in the Algarve. A tight local crew, heavily weighted toward bodyboarders, is on it at the first sign of swell. Tourists who drop in are not tolerated, and the atmosphere can tip from edgy to hostile. Respect the pecking order, take your turn, and do not paddle straight to the peak. Dawn patrol significantly improves your odds of a wave.

Access & Facilities

From Vila de Bispo, take the road toward Lagos and turn south after 1-2km. A car park sits just back from the beach. Do not leave valuables in the car in summer. Basic camping is available nearby. Water quality is clean. No significant pollution or physical hazards beyond the crowds and the wave itself.

Nearby Alternatives

If Zavial is maxed out or the locals have locked it down, Sagres town beach and Tonel can absorb crowds and work on different swell angles. The Carrapateira area to the north offers more exposed beachbreak peaks with greater swell variety when conditions allow.
