A mellow sand-bottom beach break in the Sintra coast, Praia das Maçãs sits roughly 40km NW of Lisbon and about 20km south of the Ericeira reserve. It picks up Atlantic swells from the NW through W window, performs best at low to mid tide, and works in the 2-5ft range before closing out. Offshore winds are easterly, which is typical for the Portuguese west coast in summer mornings. The wave suits beginners and those building confidence, with multiple surf schools operating on the beach year-round. On bigger winter swells it can produce more powerful peaks for intermediates, but it is not a high-performance destination. Bottom: sand. Season: consistent year-round, best Oct-Mar for size. Consistency: moderate to high. If you are advancing beyond beginner level, Ericeira's reef breaks are a short drive north and offer a serious step up in challenge and quality.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Crowd levels are moderate and largely relaxed given the beginner-heavy demographic. Surf schools operate in designated zones, which helps manage the lineup. Summer weekends draw day-trippers from Lisbon, so dawn sessions or weekday mornings are the better call if you want space.

Access & Facilities

Praia das Maçãs is accessible by car from Sintra (about 10km) or via the seasonal Sintra tram. The beachfront has cafes, restaurants, and surf school rentals. Parking is available but fills quickly in summer. Water quality is generally good. No significant hazards beyond standard beach break currents.

Nearby Alternatives

When Praia das Maçãs is flat or messy, Praia Grande to the south is a larger, more exposed beach that picks up more swell. Ericeira, 20km north, offers a full menu of reef breaks from beginner-friendly Ribeira d'Ilhas to expert-level Coxos when you are ready to graduate.
