Guincho is a long, exposed beachbreak north of Cascais that rarely goes flat and consistently pulls Lisbon's surf crowd when swell fails to wrap into the city breaks. NW to SW swell in the 3-8ft range is ideal, with E or SE winds keeping faces clean. Low to mid tide produces the best shape, particularly the wedgy, powerful rights that build off the northern cliffs. Beginners can manage small days, but size ramps up fast and the rips above head-high are genuinely dangerous. Pick a reference point on shore and check it constantly. Bottom: beach. Season: Sept-Nov and Mar-May. Consistency: high. Water quality is generally fine but can degrade after heavy rain, so skip it post-storm.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Guincho draws a moderate Lisbon crowd, heavier on weekends and during school holidays. The vibe is generally chilled and welcoming, but expect competition for the better banks in the northern section on any decent swell. Midweek dawn patrol keeps lineups manageable.

Access & Facilities

Roadside parking sits directly at the beach, with a larger car park just south at Little Guincho. Camping is available nearby. No significant facility gaps for a day trip out of Cascais or Lisbon.

Nearby Alternatives

If Guincho is blown out, Carcavelos to the south is more sheltered and one of the most versatile beachbreaks on the coast. On smaller or more southerly swells, Praia das Maçãs and the São João area offer protected lefts and reefs worth checking.
