A wedgy, powerful beach break at the mouth of the Tagus, Cova do Vapor fires when big Atlantic swell squeezes between two rocky groynes and detonates on the accumulated sand. NW to SW swell from waist to double overhead is the window, with E winds keeping it clean. The rivermouth geometry can kill size, so the spot needs genuine swell energy to get going. Best December through February for swell consistency, though summer can produce fun peaks. This is intermediate-to-advanced water: heavy, hollow waves, a serious rip beside the southern groyne, and strong river currents beyond the bay. Bottom: sand over jetty. Season: Dec-Feb primary, shoulder months possible. Consistency: moderate. Fishermen regularly work the groyne, so factor that into your paddle-out line and your patience.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

A loyal local crew, heavily bodyboard-oriented, dominates when it's on. Localism is present but manageable if you show respect. On big swells this becomes a bodyboard mecca and the water gets competitive fast. Dawn patrol in winter is your best shot at a less pressured session.

Access & Facilities

Small beachfront car park plus a secondary lot set back from the beach. The spot sits on the south bank of the Tagus facing Lisbon across the estuary. Water quality is poor due to river discharge from the Tagus mouth. Fishermen on the groyne are a consistent hazard, watch your approach.

Nearby Alternatives

When the rivermouth kills the swell, the exposed beaches along the Caparica coast to the south pick up more direct Atlantic energy. Costa da Caparica has multiple beach breaks spread across several kilometers and tends to handle a range of swell and skill levels better than Vapor on off days.
