A punchy A-frame beach break sitting on a long stretch of open Atlantic coast between Figueira da Foz and Praia da Mira, Praia da Tocha delivers steep-walled lefts and rights with legitimate barrel sections on its better days. It needs very little swell to wake up, firing from under 1m and handling solid 2m+ sets without losing its shape. Offshore winds from the east keep it clean, and the break works across all tides, giving it a longer usable window than many spots on this stretch. Intermediate surfers will find it rewarding, and the near-empty lineup during the week means space to work the peaks without the shoulder-to-shoulder scramble you get further south. Bottom: sand. Season: autumn through spring. Consistency: moderate to high. Come at dawn on a mid-week autumn swell when the easterly is holding and you will likely have multiple peaks to yourself in a classic Portuguese beach-break setting.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Localism is minimal. The village atmosphere is low-key and welcoming, and even on weekends only a handful of surfers typically show up. Don't mistake the empty lineup for a lack of quality. Respect the relaxed vibe, and you will be welcomed back.

Access & Facilities

Praia da Tocha is a small coastal village with basic amenities. Parking is straightforward near the beach access. No premium facilities on-site, so bring water and food. The nearest larger towns, Figueira da Foz and Praia da Mira, offer accommodation, restaurants, and surf supplies within a short drive.

Nearby Alternatives

If Tocha is blown out or flat, Figueira da Foz to the north offers more sheltered options and picks up swell from a wider window. Praia da Mira to the south runs a similar open beach-break setup and is worth checking on the same swell.
