Red sandstone cliffs frame a wide stretch of golden sand on Portugal's Zona Oeste coast, where Almagreira delivers consistent A-frame beach break peaks across multiple banks. NW, W, and N swells all find this beach, making it one of the more reliable options on a stretch that catches more swell than almost anywhere in the region. Best wind is S to SE, keeping faces clean when the Atlantic fires up. The wave starts working at 5-6ft and holds through 8ft+, running punchy, mid-length rides across all tides, though the beach can shrink significantly at high. Works for all abilities on smaller days, but gets heavy and rippy when size builds. Bottom: sand. Season: September to April. Consistency: high. Arrive at dawn on weekends as the crowd builds fast, and if the main peak is packed, walk the beach to find an uncrowded bank.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays are quiet. Weekends pull a crowd, and the stretch that was once mostly locals is now getting busier across the season. Humility and basic surf etiquette go a long way here. The saving grace is the length of the beach: if the main peak is congested, move up or down the sand to find your own section.

Access & Facilities

Access is via rough piste roads down from the cliff top, where most people park. Do not leave valuables in the car. The cliff path to the beach is prone to erosion, so take care on the descent. A small campsite is a short walk from the break. Water quality is clean. No confirmed surf rentals on site, so come equipped.

Nearby Alternatives

Baleal, to the southwest, offers multiple breaks and a more sheltered option when the swell is too large for Almagreira. Peniche's town breaks and Supertubos are within driving distance and provide quality alternatives when wind or sand conditions aren't cooperating here.
