A sheltered set of beach and reef peaks tucked between the town of Ericeira and the nearby campsite, Praia do Sul offers a quieter option when the main breaks in this busy surf reserve are overwhelmed with crowds. It works best on N and NW swells from waist to double-overhead, with E or SE winds keeping faces clean. Low to mid tide tends to shape the peaks more favourably, though the forecast services data suggests all tides are workable. The beach peaks suit beginners and intermediates, but the reef sections demand more experience, especially once size builds. Bottom: mixed beach, reef and rock. Season: September through April. Consistency: moderate. Watch submerged rocks on the inside carefully, particularly when paddling in and out as tide moves, and give right of way to those already out.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

This spot runs notably quiet by Ericeira standards, both midweek and on weekends. When Ribeira d'Ilhas or Coxos are firing and packed, Praia do Sul can be almost empty. Local vibe is relaxed and doable, but respect the lineup priority and don't snake sets. The fact that it stays uncrowded is partly why it should stay that way.

Access & Facilities

A car park at the southern end of the beach provides easy access. The cliff above offers a good vantage point to read the lineup before paddling out. Water quality is rated fair, so rinse off after. No specific facilities noted at the break itself, but Ericeira town is close for food, water, and rentals.

Nearby Alternatives

If Praia do Sul isn't delivering, Ribeira d'Ilhas is the obvious step-up, with its long right-hand reef just up the coast. For bigger, more serious conditions, Coxos offers one of Portugal's best right-hand reef walls. On small days, the beach breaks closer to Ericeira town are worth checking before committing to a drive.
