Heavy, thick-lipped barrels detonate on a sandsbar off Peniche's western shore, making Supertubos the most respected beachbreak in Portugal and a legitimate Pipeline warm-up. W and WNW swells are the primary fuel, though the window runs from S through NW. NE or E winds groom the face and mid-to-high tide generally keeps the lip from shutting down instantly. The lefts run longer and with more power, but shorter rights peel reliably, especially under NW swell. Head-high to double-overhead is the sweet spot before it starts dredging sand off the bottom on bigger sets. Advanced surfers will find this a serious test on good days, intermediates can get quality waves at the right size but should be ready for a genuinely competitive lineup. Bottom: sand. Season: September through April. Consistency: medium, but it fires hard when it aligns. Car theft from the adjacent car park is endemic, leave nothing visible in your vehicle.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

This is one of the most crowded lineups in Portugal. When it's on, getting a clean set wave at the main peak on your own is unlikely. Locals are well-established and not subtle about territorial priority. Paddling out alone, rather than in a group, and showing patience earns more respect. Don't expect charity on the better sets.

Access & Facilities

A dedicated car park sits directly in front of the break, with easy pedestrian access to the beach. Leave nothing of value in your vehicle: break-ins in broad daylight are frequently reported and police response is minimal. The smell from a nearby fish factory is a known and honest part of the experience. Camping facilities are available in the area.

Nearby Alternatives

When Supertubos is maxed out or too crowded, a right-hand wedge sits just to the north and is rated highly by locals who sometimes prefer it to the main break. To the south, Consolação picks up serious size and offers a long fat right on bigger swells. Nazaré, further north, is the go-to when Atlantic storms send XXL energy up the coast.
