São Julião swallows swell that other Ericeira beaches miss, making it the go-to when the region's reefs go flat or turn to slop. A wide-open beach break with shifting a-frame peaks, it works best on NW swell with a light E or NE wind holding the faces clean. Mid tide is the sweet spot, higher tides push water onto the inside and produce fun bowls for shorter boards. Size range of waist-high to overhead suits intermediates well, though the rips and heavy shorebreak demand genuine water confidence. Bottom: sand. Season: September to April, though it will fire outside those months when swell arrives. Consistency: one of the highest in the zone. If sandbars are firing here and crowds are building, arrive early or check the shoulders of the beach before paddling straight to the main peak.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Crowds stay light most sessions, but when consistent quality sandbars form, word travels fast through Ericeira and the lineup fills. The local vibe is watchful but fair. Spread out across the available peaks, do not camp on the main takeoff, and the lineup stays functional. Respect earns respect here.

Access & Facilities

Cliff-top parking and a beach ramp make access straightforward. The beach holds EU Blue Flag status, so water quality is reliably clean. Ericeira town is close for food, coffee, and board rental if needed.

Nearby Alternatives

When São Julião is too big or blown out, the sheltered reefs closer to Ericeira village handle size with more structure. Ribeira d'Ilhas and Coxos are the regional benchmarks when NW groundswell is running properly and you want walls over peaks.
