A lava finger jutting from the south tip of Ribeira Bay, Reef is one of Ericeira's most consequential tubes and a cornerstone of Europe's only World Surfing Reserve. North to NW swells jack up on an outside rock and pitch into a fast, ledgey right that offers roughly four seconds of hollow perfection before ending abruptly on shallow, urchin-grazed rock shelf. East winds keep it clean, mid tide is the sweet spot. This is a specialist wave for surfers with genuine rock-ledge tube experience. The takeoff zone is tight, locals know each other well, and patience is not optional. Bottom: rock reef. Season: autumn through spring, Oct to Mar. Consistency: medium, around 150 days per year. Blow the drop and you are on dry reef, so arrive with a board you can afford to ding and check the lineup before paddling out.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The lineup is consistently crowded when conditions align, and the local vibe is rated intimidating. The takeoff spot is narrow, priority is fiercely observed, and visiting surfers should expect to wait. Dawn patrol on weekdays in shoulder season gives the best chance of a semi-open lineup. Aggression is rare but patience is mandatory.

Access & Facilities

A dirt parking area sits right at the break, five minutes from Ericeira town centre. Camping is available nearby. Water quality is generally clean. The reef itself is the main hazard: shallow, sharp, and urchin-covered. Booties are worth considering.

Nearby Alternatives

Piedra Branca, roughly 100m south, offers a hollow high-tide left when Reef is too shallow or too crowded. A slightly mushier right breaks just south of the main peak and suits surfers who want the location without the consequence. On bigger swells a left breaks off the north edge of the bay.
