A sheltered beach break tucked just north of Praia Grande on Portugal's Zona Oeste coast, Praia Pequena punches harder than its small footprint suggests. It needs SW to NW swell from around 2ft to power up and handles well overhead when the sandbar cooperates. Offshore winds are typically from the E to NE, and the break works across all tides. It suits intermediate to advanced surfers: the wave is fast and powerful, and when the bar aligns it barrels both ways. During the week you'll find a quiet lineup, but weekends draw crowds from Lisbon so arrive early or lower your expectations. Bottom: sand. Season: Sep through Mar. Consistency: moderate, swell-dependent. Above 5ft the right-hander off the rocks becomes the feature, trading hollow for length and maneuverability, connecting through shallower inside sections that get progressively more critical.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays are genuinely quiet for a spot this close to Lisbon. Weekends are a different story: the compact beach concentrates crowds fast. There's no heavy localism noted, but a small beach with a quality bar means patience and respect go a long way. Dawn patrol on weekends is the obvious answer.

Access & Facilities

Praia Pequena sits immediately to the right of Praia Grande, easily reached from Sintra or Colares. Parking and basic amenities are shared with Praia Grande. Watch for rocks on the right-hand side, particularly at lower tides when the inside sections get shallow.

Nearby Alternatives

Praia Grande itself offers longer, more exposed beach peaks and handles bigger swells well. When W and NW swells are too large for Praia Pequena, Praia das Maçãs to the north offers a more sheltered option.
