A vast cliff-backed beach on Portugal's exposed Costa Vicentina, Praia da Cordoama runs shifting sandbanks over a mixed sand-reef bottom that produces rights and lefts across a wide stretch of coastline. NW to SW swell is the window, with offshore E to SE winds keeping it clean. Best from waist-high to double overhead before the power becomes unmanageable. Low to mid tide is optimal, though some banks fire through all stages. Suits supervised beginners on small days and experienced surfers when size builds. Crowds stay mellow year-round and when the main peak is busy, empty peaks stretch up and down the beach. Bottom: mixed sand, reef, rocky outcrops. Season: September to February. Consistency: good in autumn and winter, windier and bumpier March onward. Never paddle out alone here: rips, currents, and exposed rocks demand a partner and solid ocean awareness before you commit.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

One of the quieter stretches on this coastline. The lineup rarely gets competitive, and the local vibe is welcoming. If the main peak draws a handful of surfers, walk the beach in either direction for uncrowded alternatives. Dawn patrol is rarely necessary here for crowd reasons, though it usually coincides with the calmest winds.

Access & Facilities

Paved access road ends at a beachfront car park directly above the beach. The descent is short. Facilities are basic so bring water and food. The water is clean along this protected natural park coastline. Watch exposed rocks at the base of the cliffs, particularly at lower tides, and treat the rips seriously.

Nearby Alternatives

Praia do Castelejo sits just to the north and picks up similar swell with a slightly different bank configuration when Cordoama is maxed or blown out. Praia de Monte Clérigo offers a more sheltered option further north if the SW swell is too heavy on this exposed stretch.
