One of Ericeira's most visible and exposed breaks, Pedra Branca is a short, sharp left slab that transforms from a fun shallow wall into a heavy, hollow pit when autumn and winter swells arrive. Optimal conditions are NW to W swell at 5-10ft, E winds, mid to high tide. Low tide is genuinely dangerous here, a shallow ledge with a carpet of sea urchins and waves that detonate without warning. Best suited to experienced shortboarders and bodyboarders who can handle a competitive, hard-charging lineup. Bottom: flat slab reef with sand and urchins. Season: September to May. Consistency: medium, but when it switches on it ranks among Portugal's best lefts. Avoid low tide entirely, and if you're not comfortable on shallow reef at double overhead, this is not your wave.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The lineup is consistently packed when conditions are good, with a tight crew of hard-charging locals who know every section. The take-off zone is small, which compresses competition further. Localism is rated doable but the vibe is competitive. Respectful surfing, reading the hierarchy, and not burning anyone is non-negotiable. Dawn patrol on weekdays will ease the pressure slightly.

Access & Facilities

Pedra Branca is visible from the road and accessible via a piste track opposite the main campsite, which is directly across the road. Free parking is available at the break. Ericeira town is close by for food and supplies. The main hazards are the urchin-covered rocks on the paddle-out, shallow ledge on the take-off, and heavy wave consequences at size. Water quality is fair.

Nearby Alternatives

When Pedra Branca is too big or too crowded, the long rights of Coxos a short distance up the coast offer a different pace. Ribeira d'Ilhas is the most consistent beach in the area and handles a wider range of conditions and skill levels. On smaller days, spots inside Ericeira town handle swell that's too small for Pedra Branca to show its teeth.
