A wide sandy beach break 10 km south of Figueira da Foz, Leirosa picks up NW swell reliably and produces fast, hollow peaks even when the swell is small. The beach runs for several kilometres and generates both rights and lefts across its length, giving beginners and intermediates plenty of room to spread out without stacking on a single peak. Offshore winds are typically from the NE or E, which is the norm for this stretch of the Portuguese coast during the summer months. Works best in the 2-6ft range, where the sand produces punchy, workable sections rather than closing out. Bottom: Sand. Season: Autumn through spring for consistency. Consistency: Moderate to high, rarely flat when any NW swell is running. Arrive early in summer when onshore sea breezes fill in mid-morning and flatten the surface out.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

This is one of the less pressured beaches on this stretch of coast. The sheer length of the beach diffuses the lineup naturally, and it draws a relaxed crowd of beginners and locals rather than a competitive shortboard scene. Summer holiday crowds pick up but rarely create real localism tension. Weekday mornings before the sea breeze are the cleanest window.

Access & Facilities

Leirosa is a Blue Flag beach with full facilities including parking, showers, and a lifeguard service in summer. The village of Costa de Lavos is just to the north. Figueira da Foz to the north has surf shops, board rentals, and a broad range of accommodation. Water quality is generally good. Watch for occasional rip currents near the groyne structures at each end of the beach.

Nearby Alternatives

When Leirosa closes out or the wind goes onshore, Figueira da Foz itself has several beach peaks to the north worth checking. Buarcos at the northern end of the bay offers more shelter in certain wind directions and a different swell angle.
